Drilling of Two Boreholes, Construction of Concrete Slabs, and Supply & Installation of Hand Pump Systems
1. Background
Dufatanye Organization is a community-focused non-governmental organization committed to improving access to clean water, sanitation, and sustainable livelihoods in rural communities across Rwanda. Through its interventions, under the Village of Hope project, Dufatanye aims to reduce waterborne diseases, improve hygiene standards, and enhance the quality of life for vulnerable populations.
This project, titled “Village of Hope”, is implemented in partnership with the Suyana Foundation, an organization dedicated to supporting sustainable water access and community resilience initiatives globally.
Under this partnership, Dufatanye seeks to improve access to safe and reliable water sources in Nyanza and Nyaruguru Districts through the construction of boreholes equipped with hand pump systems.
2. Scope of Work
A. Borehole Drilling
1. Borehole Drilling (Nyanza District)
Site Location
- Province: Southern Province
- District: Nyanza
- Sector: Rwabicuma
- Location: Mubuga-Nyamiseke
Specifications
- Number of boreholes: 1
- Expected depth: 0m–100 meters (as determined by hydrogeological survey)
- Diameter of drilling: 6”
Required Activities
- Drilling (RIG MACHINE PRD SPD STALL)
- Casing installation (125mm PVC)
- Gravel packing (size 4.3mm of Gravel)
- Well development (airlifting)
- Test pumping (yield test maximum expected 1.5m³/h)
2. Borehole Drilling (Nyaruguru District)
Site Location
- Province: Southern Province
- District: Nyaruguru
- Sector: Rusenge
- Village: Mariba-Rusaniro

- Drilling (RIG MACHINE PRD SPD STAR)
- Casing installation (125mm PVC)
- Gravel packing (size 4.3mm of Gravel)
- Well development (airlifting)
- Test pumping (yield test maximum expected 1.5m³/h)
B. Construction of Concrete Slabs for 2 Boreholes
Purpose:
- Borehole protection and pump base
Type:
- Reinforced concrete slab
Typical Specifications:
- Thickness: 100 mm
- Diameter: 1.5–2 meters around borehole
Must Include:
- Drainage slope extending 6 meters away from borehole
- Soak pit or runoff channel
- Protective apron to prevent contamination
C. Pump Supply & Installation
Pump Type:
- Hand pump
Requirements:
- Pump capacity aligned with borehole yield
- Consideration of total dynamic head (depth + elevation)
- Supply and installation of pipework (rising main)
- Installation of all accessories (pump head, rods, cylinder, etc.)
- Training of local users on pump operation and basic maintenance
3. Technical Specifications
The contractor must adhere to the following standards:
- Drilling method: (rotary, percussion, or suitable method based on geology)
- Casing material: uPVC (125 mm diameter)
- Gravel pack: clean, washed gravel (4.3 mm size)
- Concrete grade: C20/25
- Compliance with Rwanda national water standards and international best practices
- Proper sanitary sealing to prevent contamination
4. Deliverables
The contractor shall provide the following:
- Borehole log (detailed geological profile)
- Pump test results (yield, drawdown, recovery)
- Water quality analysis report (physical, chemical, bacteriological)
- As-built drawings
- Operation & Maintenance (O&M) manual
- Completion report including photos and GPS coordinates
5. Timeline
- Mobilization: 1 week
