1. Introduction:

In Rwanda and across Africa, access to financing is a major driver of business growth, yet many small business owners and professionals enter into bank loan agreements without fully understanding the terms, obligations, and risks involved. Misinterpretation of contract clauses, repayment structures, or penalty provisions can expose businesses to unnecessary financial strain. At the same time, poor taxation planning and compliance can erode profitability, lead to avoidable penalties, and hinder long-term sustainability.

This training is designed to bridge these gaps by equipping participants with the skills to critically analyse bank loan contracts and to plan their taxation obligations strategically. Delivered in a practical, hands-on format, the course empowers entrepreneurs and professionals to make informed financial decisions, safeguard their business interests, and maximise the benefits of bank financing while staying tax compliant.

2. Rationale and Relevance

Small business operators often focus on accessing financing quickly, with little attention to the fine print of contracts or the long-term implications of loan repayments. Banks, while regulated, are profit-driven institutions, and understanding their terms requires legal, financial, and practical insight. Likewise, taxation is a legal obligation that, if poorly managed, can drain business resources and create legal liabilities.

By combining loan contract analysis with taxation planning, this training offers a unique and relevant skill set for business owners, managers, finance officers, and independent professionals. The knowledge gained will help participants negotiate better loan terms, manage repayments effectively, and optimise tax obligations to protect and grow their enterprises.
