TEA FIELD PRODUCTION MANAGER
One of our clients, a leading tea manufacturing company, is seeking to recruit a Tea Field Production Manager. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing all green leaf production activities supplying the assigned factory, including engagement with smallholder tea cooperative farmers and the management of estate tea fields where applicable. The role focusses on promoting sustainable agricultural practices, improving productivity and leaf quality, fostering strong relationships with key stakeholders and ensuring a consistent and reliable supply of high-quality green leaf to support factory operations.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee the day-to-day management of tea field operations to maximize the production of high-quality green leaf through sustainable agricultural practices.
- Plan, coordinate, and monitor agronomic activities including planting, infilling, pruning, harvesting, fertilizer application, and general field maintenance in line with good agricultural practices.
- Monitor crop growth, development, and overall performance; prepare accurate yield and production forecasts per acre/hectare; and identify opportunities for expansion and new tea development where applicable.
- Manage nursery activities to ensure the timely availability of healthy tea seedlings for planting and infilling programs.
- Manage forestry activities to maintain a consistent supply of firewood to the factory.
- Lead and develop field teams while fostering a culture of performance, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Prepare operational budgets, monitor costs, and provide accurate management reports and performance insights.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with tea growers through extension services, technical support, farmer engagement, and grower development initiatives.
- Coordinate the efficient collection, transportation, and delivery of quality green leaf to the factory while ensuring reliable transport systems and continuous availability of transport resources.
- Manage the procurement and distribution of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs and maintain accurate operational and farmer records.
- Ensure compliance with health, safety, environmental, hygiene, and certification standards across all field operations.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience:
- Undergraduate Degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Agribusiness, Agricultural Science, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of 8–10 years’ relevant experience in field services or farm management within a large-scale commercial tea operation. Experience working with smallholder tea farmers will be an added advantage.
- Strong practical knowledge of tea agronomy, new planting programmes, field husbandry practices, and tea production logistics.
- Proven ability to build, lead, develop, motivate, and retain a high-performing field team.
- Strong experience in preparing and managing commercial tea production budgets, operational work plans, and long-term strategic plans, with a focus on achieving key performance targets.
- Good knowledge of sustainability standards, certification schemes, and compliance requirements applicable to smallholder tea production.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with good proficiency in spoken and written Kinyarwanda and English.
- Ability to work in rural settings and communicate effectively across cultural divides.
- Sound understanding of corporate governance principles.
