Position/Job Title: Plant Maintenance Supervisor
Grade: C3

Reports To: Engineering Superintendent
Job Brief:
To supervise, plan, and coordinate all plant maintenance activities, ensuring that plant equipment and machinery are maintained safely, reliably, and efficiently, while leading and developing the maintenance team to achieve maximum plant availability.
Responsibilities:
Plant Maintenance Supervisors have the following responsibilities and duties:
- Plan, organize, and supervise preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance activities for all plant equipment and machinery (crushers, screens, conveyors, pumps, motors, etc.).
- Develop and implement maintenance schedules and programs to minimize unplanned downtime and maximize plant availability and reliability.
- Supervise, coordinate, and allocate daily tasks and to maintenance team.
- Monitor equipment performance, investigate recurring breakdowns, conduct root cause analysis, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Ensure strict compliance with Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) procedures and standards in all maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, including work orders, equipment history files, spare parts usage, and maintenance reports.
- Coordinate closely with Production/Operations teams to plan and schedule maintenance shutdowns with minimal disruption to plant output.
- Train, mentor, supervise, and evaluate the performance of maintenance staff, and identify training needs.
- Ensure proper use, calibration, and upkeep of maintenance tools, equipment, and workshop facilities.
- Participate in the preparation and control of the plant maintenance budget, monitoring maintenance costs against targets.
- Prepare and submit periodic (daily, weekly, and monthly) maintenance performance reports to the Engineering Superintendent.
- Ensure plant equipment complies with statutory, regulatory, and manufacturer requirements.
- Respond promptly to plant breakdowns and emergencies, mobilizing the maintenance team to restore operations safely and quickly.
Job Requirements: The Plant Maintenance Supervisor should have the following qualifications and skills:
- Bachelor's Degree (A0) or Advanced Diploma (A1) in Mechanical Engineering, with extensive relevant experience.
- Minimum 5 years of proven experience in plant maintenance, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role, preferably within a mining, heavy industrial processing plant.
- Strong working knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems used in crushing, screening, and materials-processing plants.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance planning principles; familiarity with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) is an added advantage.
- Strong leadership, team management, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to supervise a multidisciplinary maintenance team.
- Good analytical and problem-solving skills, with proven ability to conduct root cause analysis and implement lasting corrective actions.
- Sound understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) regulations applicable to industrial and mining operations.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel) and maintenance reporting/documentation tools.
- Ability to work under pressure, manage competing priorities, and make sound decisions during breakdowns or emergencies.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English; knowledge of Kinyarwanda and/or French is an advantage.
- Willingness to work extended hours, weekends, or be on standby/on call as required by plant operations.
