Publication date: 31.10.2024
Introduction
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH is a federally owned international cooperation enterprise for sustainable development with worldwide operations. The GIZ Office in Kigali covers GIZ’s portfolio in Rwanda and Burundi. GIZ Rwanda/Burundi implements projects on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, the European Union and other commissioning authorities in the following priority areas: Sustainable Economic Development; Good Governance; Climate, Energy and Sustainable Urban Development; Digitalization and Digital Economy; and regional projects in the Great Lakes Region.
Background
The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH was commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) to implement the project 'Sustainable Mechanization of Value Chains through Innovative, Gender-Sensitive Business Models', jointly with Germany Machinery Rings Foundation and Volkswagen.
Sustainable mechanization of value chains through innovative, gender-sensitive business models" is an individual fund measure (EZM) of the "Fund for the promotion of innovations in the agricultural and food sector" (i4Ag), a global fund financed by the Special Initiative "Transformation of Agricultural and Food Systems" (SI AGER). The aim of this EZM fund is to facilitate access to mechanization services in agriculture, thereby improving the livelihoods of Rwandan smallholder farmers and SMEs, as well as their resilience towards climate change.
The main activities of the project are to establish Machinery Rings in Gashora, Bugesera as a self-help organization for and by smallholder farmers, to introduce the electric tractors developed by Volkswagen, to Construct an e-Hub with photovoltaic to charge the e-tractors with renewable energy, establish SMEs in the e-Hub, in the post-harvest and processing sector, and the development of skills in sustainable and climate resilient farming.
Context
The Sustainable Mechanisation (i4Ag) project, together with its partners, organises ongoing capacity building for its MR members and beneficiaries as smallholder farmers to improve agricultural practices, adopt sustainable farming methods and increase crop yields. This leads to greater income stability and improved livelihoods.
Capacity building of MR farmers in post-harvest and sustainable agriculture will be a continuous process using various modern equipment and tools to give them access to skills, facilitation and empowerment in the use of technical tools. Training will be provided through demonstration, with emphasis on reducing productivity losses through the use of innovative techniques that prevent spoilage, improve quality and extend shelf-life of agricultural produce. In addition, the acquisition of skills in post-harvest techniques will help maintain the nutritional quality of harvested produce.
In the same vein, Sustainable Mechanisation (i4Ag), implemented by GIZ together with partners, would like to invite interested and eligible national and international companies to tender for the supply of high quality small post-harvest tools and equipment to facilitate MRs to carry out practical training and capacity building in modern agriculture and value chain management.
