Founded in 2006, Building Tomorrow (BT) is a community-powered organization that harnesses the potential of local change-makers to connect learners across rural East Africa with transformational education programs. Through the organization’s signature Roots to Rise (R2R) literacy and numeracy program, BT has enrolled more than 975,000 learners since the start of the program. BT’s work is powered by a team of over 20,000 Community Education Volunteers, in partnership with local and national-level stakeholders. In 2025, BT signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Rwanda’s Ministry of Education. This milestone agreement began the next chapter of BT’s work, complementing continued scaling of the organization’s proven locally-led model in Rwanda, developing sustainable education opportunities for even more learners throughout rural communities in East Africa.
