1. Introduction
In today’s fast-evolving world, data is the cornerstone of innovation, strategy, and progress. Across Africa, organizations in sectors like agriculture, business, finance, healthcare, development NGOs and technology are embracing data-driven decision-making to solve complex challenges and seize new opportunities. Yet, many professionals lack the practical skills to transform raw data into actionable insights. DATA+ Rwanda proudly presents a dynamic 6-day (3-weekend) training program on data analysis using R programming, crafted for African professionals from all walks of life. This immersive course takes you from foundational concepts to intermediate expertise, empowering you to analyze data, uncover trends, and drive impact in your field. Whether you’re an NGO staff member, junior data analyst, policymaker, researcher, or business leader, this training will equip you with the tools to thrive in a data-centric future.
2. Why R?
R is the gold standard for data analysis and statistical computing. As an open-source language, R offers a rich ecosystem of tools and libraries, making it the go-to choice for data professionals worldwide. From cleaning messy datasets to building sophisticated visualizations and predictive models, R’s capabilities are unmatched. Its user-friendly syntax is accessible to beginners, while its advanced packages, like dplyr and caret, cater to complex analytical needs. For African professionals, R provides a cost-effective, globally recognized platform to tackle local challenges, whether optimizing agricultural yields, analyzing public health trends, or driving business growth. By mastering R, you’ll join a global community of data innovators and position yourself at the forefront of Africa’s data revolution.
3. Training Objectives
This intensive program is designed to deliver practical, career-enhancing skills. By the end of the 6-day training, participants will be able to:
- Build a Strong Foundation: Master essential statistical concepts and R programming basics, including data types, functions, and logic flows, to confidently navigate the R environment.
- Streamline Data Workflows: Import, clean, and reshape diverse datasets with precision, using R’s cutting-edge tools to prepare data for impactful analysis.
- Craft Compelling Visuals: Create stunning, professional visualizations with libraries like ggplot2 to tell data-driven stories that resonate with stakeholders.
- Conduct Robust Statistical Analysis: Apply statistical techniques to explore data, validate hypotheses, and uncover insights that inform strategic decisions.
- Communicate with Impact: Translate complex data into clear, persuasive narratives, tailored for technical and non-technical audiences, to drive innovation and action.
4. Who Should Attend
This training welcomes African professionals from all backgrounds, including business analysts, healthcare practitioners, researchers, policymakers, and tech enthusiasts, eager to master coding and data analysis with R. No prior programming experience is needed, just a passion for data-driven solutions. Whether you’re in health, economics, agriculture, finance, public policy, or transitioning into data science, this course starts from the basics and advances to intermediate skills, empowering you to tackle real-world challenges and boost your career in Rwanda and beyond.
5. Facilitation Team
Dr. Lema Logamou is an expert statistician and data scientist with Phd in statistics. Dr. Lema is an experienced data scientist currently working as a researcher for AIMS (African Institute of Mathematical Sciences) and a data scientist for the Rwanda National Institute of Statistics (NISR). The lead trainer is supported by co-facilitators who provide hands-on, one-on-one guidance throughout the course, ensuring every participant, regardless of prior experience, receives the attention needed to master the material.
