As a Legal Support Consultant at Medical Doctors for Choice, you will play a critical role in guiding our work through complex legal landscapes, ensuring that our mission remains grounded in legal integrity. You will be instrumental in safeguarding access to safe reproductive health services and will support a healthcare landscape that resonates with our vision of a stigma-free, supportive environment for all.

Position: Legal Support Consultant

Location: Kigali, Rwanda

Reports to: Executive Director

Type: Part-time

Contract Duration: Initial contract until February 28th, 2025, subject to a 3-month

Key Roles and Responsibilities

Legal Guidance and Compliance

  • Advise MDFC on legal considerations in all areas of SRHR, ensuring alignment with the existing Rwandan laws and policies.
  • Provide ongoing legal support to MDFC network members, helping them navigate legal ambiguities or challenges encountered in their daily practices.

Risk Management under Legal Perspectives

  • Develop and implement risk management strategies to address potential legal challenges and support MDFC in maintaining compliance with evolving legal standards.

Training and Capacity Building

  • Lead training sessions on relevant legal frameworks and compliance for MDFC staff and healthcare providers within the network.
  • Provide guidance on how to manage legal risks while delivering SRHR services, empowering providers to offer stigma-free care confidently.

Establishment of a Legal Consultation Helpline

  • Work with MDFC to set up and operate a dedicated legal consultation helpline for healthcare providers, offering real-time legal assistance on issues related to SRHR.

Documentation and Reporting

  • Document best practices, legal challenges, and case studies to support MDFC’s advocacy and program development.
  • Compile regular reports on legal issues encountered, solutions provided, and recommendations for strengthening MDFC’s legal support systems.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in law.
  • Professional experience in legal practice, preferably with a focus on reproductive health, SRHR, or healthcare law.
  • Strong knowledge of Rwandan legal frameworks, particularly in SRHR and reproductive rights.
  • Proven skills in legal research, analysis, and policy interpretation.
  • Excellent communication and organizational abilities, with a focus on training and advisory work.
  • Proficiency in legal software and tools, and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.
