About the job

We are seeking an experienced and dedicated Environmental Specialist to join our team at SteelRwa Industries. The ideal candidate will be responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining robust environmental management systems to ensure full compliance with national legislation, international standards, and the company’s sustainability objectives.

As an Environmental Specialist, you will play a key role in managing waste, emissions, and resource efficiency across the steel production process. You will lead environmental audits, monitor performance indicators, and serve as the primary liaison between the company and government agencies on environmental matters. This role requires strong technical expertise, a deep understanding of environmental regulations, and a commitment to continuous improvement and sustainable industrial practices.

About the company

Established in March 2011, SteelRwa industries. is the leading manufacturer of high tensile SteelRwa 500 TMT (Thermo Mechanically – Treated) steel reinforcement bars used in the construction of residential, commercial, industrial, and other civil structures. SteelRwa is an automated manufacturing facility. It is a member of the MMD Group which has manufacturing facilities in East, West and Central Africa; Rwanda, Burundi, Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, Benin, Angola and DRC.

Role and responsibilities

1. Environmental Compliance and Regulation

  • Ensure company operations comply with all relevant environmental laws, permits, and regulations issued by the regulatory authorities.
  • Maintain up-to-date environmental documentation, licenses, and certifications.
  • Lead preparation and submission of environmental compliance reports to regulatory agencies.

2. Monitor and report on the Environmental Impact Assessment conditions of approval/ EMP requirements.

  • Conduct daily and regular onsite inspection to ensure compliance with the Environment standards and legals requirements
  • Identify, assess, and report environmental risks associated with steel production and recycling activities.
  • Track and report key environmental indicators (waste, air emissions, water consumption, energy use, and noise levels).

3. Waste and Resource Management programs

  • Oversee collection, segregation, and disposal of waste in compliance with national regulations and best
    practices.
  • Develop and ensure compliance with waste minimization, recycling, and reuse initiatives on site.
  • Monitor and report hazardous material storage and ensure proper handling and disposal procedures.

4. ISO 14001 Environmental Management System

  • Ensure Implementation and maintaining of the ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS).
  • Coordinate conducting of internal audits to assess compliance with ISO requirements and lead corrective and preventive action plans.
  • Coordinate external ISO audits and ensure continuous improvement of the EMS.

5. Pollution Prevention and Energy Efficiency

  • Identify opportunities to reduce air, water, and soil pollution arising from production processes.
  • Support initiatives for energy efficiency, water conservation, and carbon footprint reduction.
  • Collaborate with technical and production teams to adopt environmentally friendly technologies and practices.

6. Environmental Reporting and Sustainability

  • Prepare and present quarterly and annual environmental performance reports.
  • Contribute to the company’s sustainability reporting and environmental performance tracking.
  • Develop environmental KPIs and measure progress toward company sustainability goals.

7. Stakeholder and Government Liaison

  • Serve as the focal person between the company and environmental authorities, communities, and partners.
  • Coordinate environmental inspections, audits, and stakeholder consultations.
  • Represent the company in government, community, and industry environmental forums.

8. Training and Awareness

  • Conduct regular environmental awareness sessions and training for employees and contractors.
  • Promote a culture of environmental responsibility and continuous improvement across all departments.

9. Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Develop and maintain site emergency response plans for environmental incidents (e.g., spills, leaks, fire).
  • Conduct drills and ensure proper containment, mitigation, and reporting procedures.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science, Environmental or Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Minimum of 3–5 years’ experience in environmental management within industrial or manufacturing settings (steel or heavy industry preferred).
  • Strong knowledge of national environmental regulations and international standards (ISO 14001, ISO 45001).
  • Experience in conducting EIAs, environmental monitoring, and internal audits.
  • Certification in ISO 14001:2015 implementation or auditing is an advantage.
  • Familiarity with sustainability reporting frameworks (e.g., GRI, ESG metrics) is desirable.
