From Research Design to Data Analysis:
Hands-On Training in Quantitative Data Collection, Management, and Analysis
1. Background
Research and innovation are among the most powerful drivers of job creation, economic transformation, and community development. Yet, despite the abundance of research outputs and innovations produced daily, a persistent gap remains between knowledge generation and its translation into tangible impact for communities.
One of the critical barriers is the limited capacity to conduct rigorous research that generates reliable, evidence-based results. In line with one of our core missions, which is to promote research for the betterment of the global population, The Result, together with its partners, is implementing a project titled “From Knowledge to Impact”. The project seeks to strengthen research practices and innovations so that they respond to employment outcomes, stakeholder needs, and community development.
It is against this background that The Result is organizing a training on designing quantitative data collection tools, digitalizing these tools and collecting data using KoboToolbox, managing and cleaning datasets using advanced Excel functions, and analyzing data using SPSS.
2. Training Objectives
General objective: To strengthen participants’ capacity to design, collect, manage, and analyze quantitative research data in order to produce reliable and evidence-based findings.
Specific objectives: By the end of this training, participants will be able to:
- Formulate a clear and well-grounded research problem statement.
- Develop specific, measurable, and achievable research objectives.
- Design well-structured quantitative data collection tools aligned with the study objectives.
- Digitalize data collection tools and collect data using KoboToolbox.
- Manage and clean datasets using advanced Excel functions.
- Perform descriptive and inferential statistical analysis using SPSS.
- Interpret and discuss results to draw sound conclusions and practical recommendations.
3. Expected Results
This is a hands-on training: by the end, each participant will have designed, collected, cleaned, and analyzed data for their own study. Specifically, participants will have achieved the following:
- Strengthened research design skills: Participants formulate clear problem statements and well-aligned research objectives, questions, and hypotheses for their ongoing or upcoming studies.
- Quality data collection tools: Participants develop well-structured quantitative questionnaires that are aligned with their study objectives and ready for use in their own research.
- Digital data collection competence: Participants build, deploy, and monitor digital data collection forms using Kobo Toolbox, including skip logic, constraints, and offline data collection.
- Improved data management skills: Participants organize, clean, and prepare analysis-ready datasets using advanced Excel functions, with proper coding and documentation.
- Statistical analysis competence: Participants perform appropriate descriptive and inferential analyses in SPSS and present results in clear tables and figures.
- Evidence-based interpretation and reporting: Participants interpret and discuss findings accurately and translate them into sound conclusions and practical recommendations that contribute to community impact.
- Enhanced employability and job opportunities: Participants gain practical, in-demand data skills in Kobo Toolbox, advanced Excel, and SPSS that increase their competitiveness for jobs, internships, and consultancies in research, monitoring and evaluation, and data analysis.
4. Training Content
The training runs from 19th October to 13th November 2026, on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays (12 days), from 6:00 PM to 8:30 PM. It is organized into six modules and 24 sessions, starting with a short pre-training survey. Each Friday ends with a homework assignment in which participants apply the week’s skills to their own research. Most days have two sessions of 1 hour 15 minutes each, while questionnaire design is covered in one full-evening session.
