1. Job Purpose

The Senior Architect will provide senior-level professional technical expertise and leadership in the planning, design, coordination and delivery of aviation and airport infrastructure and facilities across ATL projects, including logistics, travel, infrastructure and related development projects. The role will ensure that all architectural and engineering solutions are technically sound, operationally fit for purpose and compliant with applicable laws and regulations, approved project requirements, safety standards, quality requirements and sustainability objectives. 

The position will work as part of multidisciplinary project teams, coordinating with designers, consultants, contractors, regulators, stakeholders and other technical specialists to support the successful delivery of ATL projects to the required quality, cost, schedule, safety and performance standards. The Senior Architect will also provide technical leadership, direction and mentorship to project architects and design staff, and may deputise for senior technical leadership on aviation and airport infrastructure matters as required.

2. Key Duties & Responsibilities;

a. Architectural & Engineering Design

• Develop, review and coordinate architectural designs, drawings, specifications, calculations and technical documentation for ATL facilities and infrastructure.
• Ensure designs are aligned with airport operational requirements, ICAO standards, applicable building codes, technical standards and approved project specifications.
• Review design proposals, technical submissions and design changes, providing professional recommendations on functionality, safety, constructability, cost and sustainability.
• Support the development of technically robust and cost-effective solutions throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provide senior technical leadership, direction and mentorship to project architects, designers and technical staff engaged on ATL aviation and airport infrastructure projects.

b. Infrastructure & Multidisciplinary Coordination

• Coordinate technical interfaces across terminal facilities, airside infrastructure, landside facilities, utilities, cargo, passenger processing, support facilities and associated infrastructure.
• Facilitate effective coordination between architectural, civil, structural, mechanical, electrical, ICT, aviation systems and other specialist disciplines.
• Identify and resolve technical interfaces, design conflicts and coordination issues that may affect project delivery.
• Ensure airport operational, passenger experience, safety, security and maintainability requirements are incorporated into technical solutions.

c. Project Delivery & Technical Oversight

• Monitor the implementation of approved designs, drawings, specifications and technical requirements during construction.
• Conduct site inspections and technical reviews to verify compliance with approved designs, quality standards and project specifications.
• Review contractor submissions, method statements, shop drawings, material proposals, technical queries and requests for information.
• Identify technical deviations, construction challenges and emerging issues and recommend timely corrective actions.

d. Aviation Standards, Safety & Regulatory Compliance

• Ensure technical solutions comply with applicable ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs), Rwanda Civil Aviation Authority requirements, national building regulations and relevant international standards.
• Incorporate aviation safety, security, accessibility, fire and life safety, environmental and operational requirements into design and project delivery.
• Support regulatory reviews, approvals, inspections and technical engagements with relevant authorities.
• Promote a strong culture of technical integrity, safety, compliance and quality throughout the project.

e. Quality, Cost, Risk & Change Management

• Support technical quality assurance and ensure that construction and design activities meet approved standards and specifications.
• Identify technical, design, construction and interface risks and support the development and implementation of mitigation measures.
• Review technical aspects of variations, claims, cost proposals and design changes and provide professional recommendations.
• Support value engineering and cost optimisation initiatives without compromising safety, quality, functionality or long-term asset performance.

f. Testing, Commissioning & Handover

• Support testing, commissioning, inspection and acceptance of completed facilities, systems and infrastructure.
• Participate in snagging, defects identification, rectification and close-out activities.
• Review as-built drawings, operation and maintenance documentation and other technical handover requirements.
• Support the transition of completed facilities into safe and efficient airport operations.

g. Technical Reporting & Documentation

• Maintain accurate technical records, drawings, specifications, inspection reports, approvals and project documentation.
• Prepare technical progress reports, design review reports, site inspection reports and recommendations for project leadership.
• Track technical deliverables, design approvals, outstanding issues and corrective actions.
• Ensure appropriate document control and traceability of technical decisions throughout the project lifecycle.

h. Stakeholder & Professional Coordination

• Work closely with ATL project leadership, airport operators, government institutions, regulators, consultants, contractors and other technical stakeholders.
• Participate in design reviews, technical coordination meetings, site meetings and project governance forums.
• Provide professional technical advice and communicate complex technical matters clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Represent the project professionally in technical engagements as delegated by project leadership.

3. Desired Profile

 a. Qualifications & Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Architecture Engineering, or a related discipline; a Master's degree is an added advantage.
• Professional registration with the relevant regulatory body and a valid practising licence, where applicable, is required.
• Minimum of 5 years' relevant experience in architecture, engineering, infrastructure development, construction, or major capital projects, including prior experience operating at a senior or lead technical level.
• Proven experience in the delivery or supervision of large-scale aviation, airport, transportation, infrastructure, commercial, or other complex capital projects.
• Strong knowledge of design development, multidisciplinary coordination, construction supervision, technical assurance, quality control, and applicable international technical standards.
• Demonstrated experience providing technical leadership, guidance and mentorship to architects, engineers and multidisciplinary design teams on complex capital projects.
