Animal Feed Production Expert

GIZ Rwanda

The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH has been working in Rwanda for more than 40 years.

Rwanda is a country with a turbulent and, at times, tragic history, and the impact of the 1994 genocide is still felt today. Nevertheless, Rwanda has achieved progress at a number of levels since 2000. Stability, security, steady economic growth and low corruption are some of the key successes. The country is also regarded as a pioneer in Africa in environmental protection, digitalisation and gender equality.

Despite these encouraging developments, however, Rwanda is still a very poor country that continues to rely on international support. This support is in virtually all sectors and is coordinated by the Rwandan Government. As a reliable partner in an efficient task-sharing system, GIZ works in three priority areas on behalf of the German Government:

  • Economic development and employment
  • Governance and democracy
  • Digitalisation

The Project

Within the Special Initiative "Decent Work for a Just Transition", implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, sequa implements the SME Support Scheme, which targets growth-oriented SMEs in Rwanda. The project aims to facilitate business growth and decent job creation by increasing the competitiveness, productivity, and market readiness of Rwandan SMEs. The SME Support Scheme supports medium-sized enterprises, including Indintambwe Feeds Ltd, a Rwandan animal-feed manufacturing company that produces poultry and pig feed and has a strong focus on integrating alternative protein sources, such as Black Soldier Fly (BSF), into feed formulation.

The scope of this assignment is to strengthen Indintambwe Feeds Ltd's animal-feed processing, formulation, and pelletizing systems by improving feed formulation and pellet quality, and supporting the practical integration of alternative feed ingredients, including BSF, into poultry and pig feed formulas. The expert will also train the team on SOPs, production planning, feed safety, quality control, and performance monitoring. Finally, the expert will advise the company on how to transition from small-scale to medium-scale, semi-automated production.

Your Tasks / Responsibilities

  • Conduct a technical production diagnostic covering current production capacity, feed formulation, mixing, pelletizing, storage, material flow, quality-control practices, and production bottlenecks.
  • Review and improve poultry and pig feed formulations and pellet quality, with a focus on integrating alternative feedstuffs, including BSF, to optimize cost, nutrition, sustainability, pellet durability, uniformity, moisture control, feed consistency, and customer acceptance.
  • Develop practical SOPs, quality-control checklists, production planning tools and maintenance routines for feed mixing, pelletizing, storage, hygiene, traceability, dispatch and equipment operation.
  • Develop a practical scale-up roadmap for moving from small-scale to medium-scale, semi-automated feed production, covering target production capacity, process flow and facility layout, equipment and utility requirements, staffing and skills, quality and occupational-safety controls, phased investment priorities, indicative costs, and an implementation timeline.
  • Train the production team on pelletizer operation, safe machine use, feed-quality control, maintenance roles, production KPIs and performance monitoring, including best practices for using alternative feed ingredients in feed formulations.

Your Qualifications / Skills

  • Education/training: Master's degree preferred, or at minimum a Bachelor's degree in Animal Nutrition, Feed Technology, Veterinary Science, Agricultural Engineering, Food/Feed Processing, Industrial Engineering, Production Management, or a related technical field. Training in animal feed formulation, integration of alternative feed ingredients, pelletizing, feed quality, OSH, or maintenance systems is an asset.
  • Languages: Full proficiency in English and knowledge of Kinyarwanda is an added value.
  • Other Skills: Strong knowledge of feed formulation, feed processing, pelletizing technology, alternative feed ingredient integration, including use of BSF as one component, equipment specification, SOP development, quality control, production planning, maintenance planning, feed safety, traceability, and occupational safety. Poultry and pig feed experience is an advantage.

Your Working Experience

  • General professional experience: Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in animal-feed production, feed processing, feed formulation, pelletizing, production systems, quality management, or technical advisory support to agro-processing/manufacturing SMEs.
  • Specific professional experience: Demonstrated experience in feed-mill diagnostics, feed formulation, integration of alternative feed ingredients, pelletizer specification/validation, production-capacity assessment, SOPs, quality-control tools, equipment installation readiness, and production-team training. Experience with poultry and pig feed, insect-based protein, and feed certification is a strong advantage.
